Have a look at why we recommend having an Autophix Multi System OBD Scanner on @TravelOutbackOz After an incident on a recent Cape York trip our Prado threw up a quite a display of instrument warning lights. Luckily my brother-in-law had an Autophix specifically suited to Toyotas. We were able to diagnose the issues and erase them leaving us able to continue our travels.

I'd never sought out a roof top tent but when we started planning a Cape York trip I started thinking more and more about one. I wanted a hard top but I also had weight constraints on my Prado. I also wanted the bedding to stay imside the tent. This proved more of a challenge than I thought and, if I was going to stay within budget and weight, I had to make some concessions. Enter the 23 Zero P...

    Love the inventiveness and diy. I notice you took out the rear seats. What's the go with that? I might be confusing things, but I have heard you have to register the vehicle as a two seater after doing that.

      @@TravelOutbackOz Ahh, that makes sense, and that is what I do too. Rant: So when the constable checks the vehicle and says this is registered as a 5 seater but you have only two, you would respond, its temporary for this trip and then hope the constable is not a a'hole and canaries your vehicle? Stuff like this shites me...all sense tells one that removing a seat temporarily is not a safety concern and should not attract any attention, but that an a'hole can use this against you is a failure of those that construct the laws. Rant over.

    I’m tossing my up on getting this model but I’m stuck on that bloody mattress. It really is not great. And there seems not enough room to add anymore layers. I’d be interested to hear how you went with replacing it.

    • @TravelOutbackOz
      @TravelOutbackOz 5 місяців тому

      It seems that many of the RTTs come with bloody hard mattresses. I don’t know why they can’t get this simple aspect right. Anyway, over the warmer months I haven’t bothered with it but they did supply another mattress after I complained but I suspect it is the same one anyway. I’ll be fitting over the next couple of months as we have a trip away in June. If it doesn’t work I may make a substitute out of memory foam and a softer foam. I found putting in/taking out a topper every day was annoying. Not a lot of space at pack up, I was able to leave sleeping bag and small pillows in but a topper wouldn’t fit.

      Hi there, still using the Bushman! It is a great car fridge and is very efficient power wise. The only thing I have difficulty with is large fleshy things like lettuce. If you put them too low in the fridge they suffer from the cold but baskets being the way they are, it is hard to store large items up near the top where it is less cold. Otherwise I’ve been really happy with it. Worked brilliantly on our last trip in the tropics in June as well. Cheers

      Hi Aaron, get hold of the trailer build standards here www.infrastructure.gov.au/infrastructure-transport-vehicles/vehicles/vehicle-design-regulation/rvs/bulletins/vsb1 . This will tell you about what’s required for rego. As for build I designed my own chassis but yes, you could build on top of an existing trailer chassis. I guess it comes down to what you want in a camper, a light build or something capable of going off-road like I wanted mine to do. Thanks for going to the trouble and recording the review. Always good to hear someone elses view and experience. It does sound like every other 75L dual zone fridge out there though. The Kings I have is pretty similar, if not the same (although mine is now getting onto 4 years old). What would be helpful is actual measurements - AH drawn each hour with the ambient temperature for that hour and over different common and demanding settings (-18, -18) and (-18, +3). Mine draws 1.6AH when set to -18 on the small side and +3 on the larger bin with an ambient temperature of 28oC. It uses a Secop BD50F compressor. Also, what makes it tough? Even the handles and latches on my Kings look the same. Only difference mine is blue. :) There was something else I wanted to suggest....but I forgot :)

I'm happy to try new products but I do tend to stick with brands if they do right by me. As I've just moved up here I didn't bring my whole set of current testers so if I come across any gear I'll try and do some more testing. I guess for now though I'll be setting up another battery and a dcdc charger to keep this fridge going! Thanks for your comments. Cheers Gary

      @@TravelOutbackOz Hi Gary, thanks for replying. I'm a little dubious with brands these days, there are too many "well known brands" that just, as you say, re badge and when the thing fails, tend to find all kinds of excuses not to honour their warranty. Given that, I look for price but only after I've worked out what the actual specs are and inspected it (even the specs can be dubious). Its a lot of work, and once upon a time there was a knowledgeable retailer that actually knew what they were talking about and wanted to protect their reputation, so they tended to give you a couple of good options. Not any more, they pay their staff pittance and few know anything about the products they sell...Sorry, Gary, that grumpy old man syndrome keeps escaping!

      Hi John, yes I fabricated two other brackets to capture the existing holes and then fitted the GME radio into those. Sorry, I didn’t capture that bit. Cheers

      @@TravelOutbackOz first your video really helped me to find chose the mounting spot but it was a big struggle for me to try having existing bracket to fit around those hole and same time able to slide in the radio unit. Finally realised without drilling holes in gme bracket it’s not possible to fit in existing holes of prado. I ended up using heavy duty Velcro to stick it. I will give couple of days to see if unit doesn’t fall otherwise I will have to go for drill. Thanks again for sharing this video appreciate it

      @@mvimagesau Glad it helped out to some degree then, I thought originally it was going to be easier than it was. It was also in a bugger of a spot to film that part. I ended up making a small bracket that would pick up the existing holes and this was fitted to the supplied GME bracket. In hindsight I might actually have cut out that card reader spot in the glovebox and used that but it’s in now lol

    I've had the opposite experience, despite proper tyre maintenance my st maxx wore terribly and were very slippery on wet roads...got rid of them after 40k. Now onto the Maxxis Razr at811 and waaaay happier.

      Always amazes me about tyres, any of them. For every good opinion on a brand someone comes back with a bad one. Can they be that individual? 🤷

    Using the 52l configuration for a camping trip bringing variaty of foods from ice cream to fruits, my question is that will ice cream stored at the bottom stay frozen for let's say 3 days? What temperature setting should i run to maintain the ice cream frozen yet not too cold for the rest of the produce. Thank you.

      Hi Alex, it’s all about how you pack items into the fridge. I set mine at -4deg C and everything at the bottom stayed frozen. On the next level you want things that need to stay cold but not frozen. The top shelf is where you want softer items like fruit and veg. The only problem is the basket is not all that big. It’s a bit of trial and error I’m afraid. It works ok but it just takes a bit of effort to move things between the levels. Overall though I’m very happy with the fridge. Cheers

    Hey, great review here. Straight to the point with the key features..I am a serious fan of Ledlenser lights too after many many years of experience of other brands not performing and missing key features.... ATB Tom
